In accordance with Town policy BLE.3.1 By-Law Enforcement and Animal Control will not be performed outside of regular office hours unless the situation is felt to be an extreme emergency threatening human life. If you have an extreme emergency after regular business hours, dial 9-1-1. For all other calls, please leave a message in the Town Hall voicemail box (519-534-1400 ext 143) and your call will be returned during regular business hours. The By-law Enforcement Officer is at the Town of South Bruce Peninsula's Town Hall on Tuesday's, Wednesday's and Friday's from 8:30-4:30pm unless attending to business outside the office.

Threatening/Emergency Encounters with Wild Animals

If you feel threatened by a wild animal, Ontario Provincial Police can be reached by calling 1-888-310-1122 or Dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.

 Emergency encounters include:

  • enters a school yard when school is in session
  • enters or tries to enter a residence
  • wanders into a public gathering
  • kills livestock/pets and lingers at the site
  • stalks people and lingers at the site

Bears - ministry of natural resources (MNR) bearwise program

                        The MNR implements the Bear Wise Program.  This program provides information on preventing and reporting encounters with black bears.  Please call 1-866-514-2327 (April 1-November 30) if a bear is:

  • roaming around, checking garbage cans
  • breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored
  • in a tree
  • pulling down a bird feeder or knocking over a barbecue
  • moving through a backyard or field but is not lingering

Cats/ Feral Cats

The By-law department does not respond to complaints regarding

cats. Please contact the Ontario SPCA in Owen Sound at 1-888-668-7722

If you have found a dog, please contact the Animal Control Officer at 519-534-1400 ext. 143 during regular business hours, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm.

The Town promotes responsible dog ownership in an effort to maintain a safe and enjoyable community for both people and pets. If you own a dog in the Municipality of South Bruce Peninsula, there are a few rules that you must follow:  

  1. The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is a leashed Municipality.  No person shall allow a dog off the owner's property unless under control and leashed or in the "Dogs Off Leash Recreation Area (DOLRA)".
  2. No person shall keep more than (two) 2 dogs per location anywhere in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula.
  3. Any person(s) owning more than (two) 2 dogs prior to 2008 may keep said dogs, but must not replace them unless a valid boarding establishment-no breeding licence is obtained.
  4. Every owner of a dog shall remove forthwith excrement left by the dog anywhere in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula and including in the "Dogs off Leash Recreation Area".
  5. Dogs are not permitted on Sauble Beach from May 1st to September 30th in each and every year.

 

All dog owners are required to obtain a Dog Tag for each dog they own or keep on their property. If you are a landlord and have tenants with dogs, please ensure that they receive this information.  Please see page two of this form for fees and penalties. 

You may complete this form and return it in person to the Town of South Bruce Peninsula Municipal Office in Wiarton at 315 George Street and purchase a dog tag, OR you can mail the form with payment to the Town of South Bruce Peninsula at P.O. Box 310, 315 George Street, Wiarton, ON, N0H 2T0.  You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that your dog tag can be mailed to you. The form must arrive at our office by March 31st for the discounted rate to apply.  There are no exceptions.
