Dogs

The animal control by-law regulates the number of pet dogs a household may have to a maximum of 2 (unless acquired prior to 2008). The by-law also requires that each dog is licenced. Licences can be obtained at Town hall. As well as bringing pet dogs home safely, providing them with shelter when a home cannot be found & by ensuring public safety from aggressive dogs.dogs

The Town promotes responsible dog ownership in an effort to maintain a safe and enjoyable community for both people and pets. If you own a dog in the Municipality of South Bruce Peninsula, there are a few rules that you must follow:

  1. The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is a leashed Municipality. Your dog(s) must be on a leash unless you are on your privately owned property or in one of South Bruce Peninsula's "Dogs Off Leash Recreation Area (DOLRA)".
  2. You cannot have more than (two) 2 dogs per location anywhere in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula.
  3. Any person(s) owning more than (two) 2 dogs prior to 2008 may keep said dogs, but must not replace them unless a valid boarding establishment-no breeding licence is obtained.
  4. You must always pick-up after your dog (shall remove forthwith excrement left by the dog) everywhere in South Bruce Peninsula and including in the "Dogs off Leash Recreation Area".
  5. Dogs are not permitted on Sauble Beach from June 1st to Labour Day in each and every year.
  6. All dog owners are required to obtain a Dog Tag for each dog they own or keep on their property. You may complete this form and return it in person to the Town of South Bruce Peninsula Municipal Office in Wiarton at 315 George Street and purchase a dog tag, OR you can mail the form with payment to the Town of South Bruce Peninsula at P.O. Box 310, 315 George Street, Wiarton, ON, N0H 2T0.  You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that your dog tag can be mailed to you.
