The Dog Regulating By-Law controls the number of dogs a household may have. The by-law also requires that each dog is licensed.

Rules at a Glance-Dog Regulating By-Law (34-2019)

Below are a few of the regulations contained in the by-law.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is a leashed municipality.  No person shall allow a dog off the owner's property unless under control and leashed or in the "Dogs off Leash Recreation Area” (DOLRA).

No person shall keep more than the following number of dogs per location anywhere in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula:

  • In all areas of the municipality having a lot area of less than 0.4 ha (1acre) the maximum number of dogs permitted per household is two (2).
  • In all areas of the municipality having a lot area of equal to or more than 0.4 ha (1 acre) the maximum number of dogs permitted per household is three (3).
  • In all areas of the municipality having a multi dwelling unit the maximum number of dogs permitted per unit is two (2).
  • A household is permitted to have one visiting dog in addition to the maximum number of permitted dogs for no longer than a 48 hour stay, per week, providing that the dog is licensed and the licence is affixed to the dog’s collar or harness. The property owner where the dog will be visiting shall provide 48 hours’ notice to the Animal Control Officer and provide the property owner’s address and contact information, the description of dog, the tag number and the dog owner’s contact information.

Dogs are not permitted on Sauble Beach from June 1st to Labour Day in each and every year.

Dog licensing fees must be paid each year.

Kennels/boarding establishments are only permitted in areas which are appropriately zoned, in accordance with the Zoning By-Law.

Buying Dog Tags

To get a tag for your dog, you will need to fill out an application form and return it along with payment, to the Municipal Office at 315 George Street, PO Box 310, Wiarton ON N0H 2T0.

If you are dropping of the form and payment outside of regular office hours or you are mailing the form and payment to the Town, you will need to provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that the dog tag can be mailed to you.

The fees for dog tags increase on the first day of June, each year.  Between January 1 and May 31 each year, dog tags are sold at a discounted rate.  In order to qualify for the discounted rate, the application form and full payment must arrive at our office by May 31.  There are no exceptions.

Please note that dog tags expire on December 31 each year, regardless of when they are purchased in the particular year.  Dog tags must be purchased each year.
