The Town provides waste collection and disposal services to eligible households, which includes:

  • Weekly curbside garbage collection;
  • Bi-weekly curbside recycling collection and recycling depot;
  • Hosting collection events for household hazardous waste in the spring/summer months;
  • One annual curbside bagged leaf collection in the fall; and
  • Operation of a municipal landfill site with full recycling depot.

Curbside Garbage Collection

Curbside garbage collection is carried out weekly.  To ensure collection, you must have your garbage out at the curb by 7:00 am on the day of pick-up.  Where garbage is placed in a secure container, you may place it for collection the night prior to the scheduled collection day but you must ensure that animals or weather do not scatter your garbage.  Permanent garbage containers must have a visible marker/flag/sign to indicate 'full' or 'empty'.

Each improved property that receives garbage collection is allowed to place one untagged bag (not to exceed 40 pounds) per week at the roadside for collection.  This includes apartment buildings or buildings with more than one dwelling/unit.  Each additional bag requires a bag tag to be attached.  A maximum of three bags per week is allowed to be placed for collection.  You may purchase a set of ten bag tags at a cost of $30.00 (ex. $3.00 each) at various locations within the Town; scroll down for the list of locations.

If issues arise, you may contact the contractor, Waste Management Canada directly at 1-888-730-3344 to resolve curbside collection issues/complaints.

Many seasonally-maintained roads do not receive curbside collection during the winter season.

You can view the Waste Management By-Law for all rules, regulations, and guidelines relating to garbage collection.

Curbside Garbage Collection Schedule

View the map to find your section and collection day.  Garbage collection occurs as usual over most statutory holidays, with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year's Day.  If a change is required due to these two holidays, the change will be posted on the Town's website.  View our 2022 Holiday Hours poster for Garbage, Recycling, and Landfill Schedules.

Section 1 (North)

Garbage collection occurs on Tuesday for all properties in Section 1.  Section 1 is the former Township of Albemarle, plus the area north of Bruce Road 13, including the east/west section of Bruce Road 13, Bryant St, and the Amabel/Albemarle Boundary.

Section 2 (Oliphant)

Garbage collection occurs on Tuesday for all properties in Section 2.  Section 2 is the area from the Sauble River north to the Amabel/Albemarle Boundary and the north/south section of Bruce Road 13 and the Sauble Falls Parkway north of the river.

Section 3 (Wiarton)

Garbage collection occurs on Wednesday for all properties in Section 3.  Section 3 is the area of the Town of Wiarton including Old Oliphant Rd to Bruce Road 13.

Section 4 and 4B (Sauble Beach)

Garbage collection occurs on Monday for all properties in Section 4 and 4B.  Section 4 and 4B is the area from the south boundary with Saugeen Indian Reserve north to the Sauble River, including all built up areas or subdivisions in Sauble Beach (excluding east of Jewel Bridge).  Section 4B extending east on Main St to and excluding Municipal Rd.

Section 5 (Rural)

Garbage collection occurs on Wednesday for all properties in Section 5.  Section 5 is the area south of Bruce Road 13 from Highway 6 easterly (excluding Wiarton) to and including all subdivisions off Bruce Road 8 (e.g. Clifford Subdivision) plus the former Village of Hepworth, and the pick-up of Bruce Road 8 from Hepworth to Sauble Beach (including east of Jewel Bridge and Dorena Cres).

Section 6

Garbage collection occurs on Thursday for most properties in Section 6 (with the exception of an area of Chesley Lake described below).  Section 6 is the area from Highway 21 north to the south side of Bruce Road 8, to include all areas not included in any other section.

There is an exception if you live at Chesley Lake on Sunnyview Drive, Sunny Crescent, Sunny Lane, Golf Course Road, or Tri Par Lane; these roads are collected seasonally by a separate contractor. Curbside garbage and recycling is collected on these roads on Wednesdays between May 1 and November 30.  In the off-season, December 1 through to April 30, the Town places a bin at the end of Camp Road for the residents of these roads to place their garbage.  This bin is placed for the residents, not for the campground.  The bin is removed for the season once curbside garbage collection commences.  During the off-season, residents from the Chesley Lake area are able to take any and all recycling to the recycling depot located at the Amabel Landfill Site.

Tips to Ensure your Garbage is Collected

  • Ensure your garbage is at the curb by 7:00am on the day of pickup;
  • If you have a permanent garbage box, ensure there is a flag/marker/sign that clearly indicates there is garbage to pickup;
  • Ensure your garbage box is clear of snow and easily accessible in the winter months;
  • If you have more than one bag, ensure the additional bags have Town-approved bag tags.  Each property is permitted to put out up to three bags each week, two of which must have bag tags;
  • Make sure your garbage bag does not weigh more than 40 pounds;
  • Ensure you do not have recyclable materials mixed with your garbage;
  • If you have met all of these items, and you require more information, inquiries regarding curbside collection may be directed to our contractor, Waste Management at 1-888-730-3344, with the exception of Sunnyview Dr., Sunny Cres., Sunny Ln., Gold Course Rd., and Tri Par Ln., who can contact the Public Works Department.
